Our design philosophy

At Backyard Grannys we have been building high quality granny flats for over 10 years. In that time we’ve listened to over 1,500 customers about their wants and needs for a granny flat and suited our projects to perfectly fit their lifestyle, budget and site requirements. Over this time we have refined our most common design solutions into what we call our Architectural Granny Flat Design range. Each of these granny flat designs is the result of years of problems solving, intentional design, and refinement that culminates in the most functional and beautiful buildings that work within the constraints of a granny flat.

Our designs focus on the layout of the floor plan first. You will notice each design represents a unique floor plan that cleverly optimises the flow of foot traffic while considering the combination of spaces to create the perfect living environment in a given set of constraints. We have designs optimised for long narrow blocks, short wide blocks, triangular and irregular shaped blocks and everything in-between.

These designs make the most of each block by carefully considering whether the broad or narrow side of the granny flat works best as the entry point, creating a natural flow through the living, dining and sleeping areas. By applying these principles, we’ve developed granny flat designs that feel open, spacious and comfortable – all within the standard 60m² footprint of a complying New South Wales granny flat. Best of all, many of our designs qualify for a no council approval process, helping you save time and enjoy your new granny flat sooner.

We also consider the typical use cases of our granny flats with smart one bedroom designs commonly used as guest accommodation, studio spaces and the historical use of housing for elderly relatives. We also offer two bedroom designs commonly used for extra bedrooms, family or rental spaces. Additionally, for big families and student accommodation settings we offer 3 bedroom designs along with 2 storey designs for the ultimate space addition.

These floor plans are paired with quality finishes, construction elements and façade options to create the finished designs you see here. Our designs are created with these selections in mind, either pairing with a specific set of façade options or recommended additions such as porches, entryways, or rooflines.
