  • Alex Mitchell
    Alex Mitchell Managing Director

    Alex has more than 16 years’ experience since completing his Bachelor of Construction Management from the University of Newcastle.

    Alex’s construction career began in 2002, just after he finished university, when he moved to Sydney to join a mid-tier construction company. He spent the next 8 years in Sydney in project management roles working on projects in the range of 1 – 10 million.

    Alex has developed a strong background in the commercial construction sector – working on a range of projects such as fit outs, major club construction projects, retirement villages and nursing homes. He has established his skills in systems and applies them now to his current businesses. Alex is structured, systematic and has a passion for residential building.

    In 2014 Alex won the Young Entrepreneur Award with Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards and in 2015 received the Hunter Business Chamber Merit Award.

    Alex is also passionate about creating an enjoyable work culture and together with his team they put the clients first to achieve quality outcomes.

    Alex is passionate about the construction industry, business and his team.

    Alex started Backyard Grannys in 2011 due to market demand. Backyard Grannys was formed with the goal to be the leading granny flat builders in Newcastle and the Central Coast. We are leading the way having built over 700 granny flats since we began. Backyard Grannys is now the leading granny flat builder having built in excess of 700 granny flats with a long list of client testimonials.

    Alex enjoys coming to work and his goal is to see his employees also enjoy themselves and loving coming to work. He has created an enjoyable office and site environment where his employees have the opportunity to succeed and grow. There is a genuine emphasis from Alex to provide apprenticeships and training opportunities to all employees of Backyard Grannys.

    Alex has a high expectation of quality with his motto being “If it’s not good enough for our own home, then it’s not good enough for anyone else”.

        Grant is another first point of contact for enquiring clients. Grant’s clients will get the granny flat they want and love because he enjoys taking time to listen and will always ask the right questions, which results in a creative solution tailored to meet each customer’s needs. Grant has degrees in Chemical Engineering and Process Control, and his engineering background helps him to pay attention to the details, while also looking at the big picture. One of Grant’s favourite things about working as a consultant, is getting the chance to have his clients heard, and helping take the time needed to create beautiful and modern granny flats.

              James Sales Consultant

              James began his career in the building industry in 2008 and is a qualified carpenter by trade. He has been involved in new home sales for over four years, specialising in custom designs, in particular, sloping sites. He is currently completing a Certificate IV in Building and is a passionate and friendly member of the Backyard Grannys team.

                Daniel Operations Manager

                Daniel holds a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management (Honours) and is now studying his Masters of Business Administration and has worked for the company for 4 years. Dan works closely with all the teams in the business to ensure that processes are efficient, and that clients’ expectations are met at each stage of the project.                   Jack Building Coordinator

                  Jack has completed his Bachelor of Construction Management with the University of Newcastle, and has been with the Backyard Grannys team for over 2 years, working on a large number of granny flat projects in that time. Working closely with clients, certifiers, engineers, suppliers and tradesmen, Jack always enjoys a challenge and works tirelessly to ensure that his projects progress quickly and smoothly.                     Jacob Building Coordinator

                    In his time with Backyard Grannys, Jacob has worked successfully with clients to project manage the construction process of 60+ granny flats throughout the Newcastle and Central Coast areas. Jacob has a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management from the University of Newcastle, and is passionate about the construction industry and his role in providing clients with an exceptional construction experience.                       Darrell Site Supervisor

                      Darrell has gained over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry since he completed his apprenticeship as a carpenter, and has operated his own building company for many years prior to joining our team. He is focused on quality, ensuring clients will be satisfied with their finished product, and is constantly onsite with our employees and subcontractors, making sure everything meets the high standards of our directors and clients.

                        Aemelia Architectural Designer

                        Aemelia holds a Bachelor of Design in Architecture at the University of Newcastle, and is the architectural designer at Backyard Grannys. She has previously worked in interior design and has extensive experience in customer service from working in the hospitality sector. Aemelia works closely with our approvals team and sales team to ensure our clients vision of their dream granny flat or small home comes to life. Aemelia also has an artistic flair and really enjoys taking our clients through the selections process for their granny flat including helping pick colours and finishes which enhance their home.

                                  Ashlee Approvals Coordinator

                                  Ashlee came to Backyard Grannys with extensive experience in customer service, with particular focus on interior design and the pre-construction process in the residential sector.

                                  She is currently completing a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management from the University of Newcastle and recently completed her thesis focusing on environmental sustainability.

                                      Kris has worked in the administration field for over 20 years in both the transport and construction industries. Kris’ role as the Office Manager incorporates accounts payable and accounts receivable. She is a very detail orientated person who loves to get things right and ensures all the correct processes are followed for a smooth-running office.

                                        Erin Procurement Officer

                                        Erin holds a Bachelor of Information Technology and has also studied business and accounts administration. She brings 6 years of experience and a diverse skill set to the team. Erin works closely with the project team and our suppliers to ensure that projects are delivered on time and in line with the client’s expectations, ensuring every item that is ordered matches each client’s specific collections.
