Our friendly, dedicated team at Backyard Grannys have a wealth of knowledge and experience in delivering affordable, high quality granny flats.

They will guide you through the design, approval and build process from concept to completion and work in partnership with you to ensure it is as simple and straight forward as possible. Not only are they the backbone of everything that we do, their passion and drive for designing and building granny flats is evident at every step of your building journey.

Meet our directors

Mark Neumann and Alex Mitchell first met in 2007 when Mark was a local builder working on projects with Alex, a Project Manager for another firm.

This collaboration continued on for 6 or so jobs before they decided they should start a company together. Nulex Construction, a combination of Alex and Neumann, started trading in 2011 – the same year they completed their first granny flat.

Backyard Grannys was formed with the goal to be the leading granny flat builders in Newcastle and the Central Coast. We are leading the way, having completed in excess of 100 granny flats in 2016.

At Backyard Grannys, we pride ourselves on the solutions we provide for our clients. The reason we are able to do this is because of our expert team, from our sales representatives through to our building coordinators.

    Geoff has over 25 years in Building Construction Fire Engineering and has been a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers since 1999. He has experience in property management, so has thorough knowledge of the financial benefits of granny flat ownership, and ensures clients understand each step of the journey towards a granny flat purchase.

    Grant Mascini Sales Consultant

    Grant has 20 years’ experience as a Chemical Engineer, but joined our sales team in 2017 for something different and to increase his skill set outside of engineering. His engineering background has caused Grant to become a detailed person which is a big benefit in his role. Grant is a great listener and knows how to ask the right questions with clients to ensure they get the granny flat solution they want.

Dan develops new processes and systems to continue to improve the way we build granny flats.

    Jack has completed his Bachelor of Construction Management with the University of Newcastle, and has been with the Backyard Grannys team for over 2 years, working on a large number of granny flat projects in that time. Working closely with clients, certifiers, engineers, suppliers and tradesmen, Jack always enjoys a challenge and works tirelessly to ensure that his projects progress quickly and smoothly.

    In his time with Backyard Grannys, Jacob has worked successfully with clients to project manage the construction process of 60+ granny flats throughout the Newcastle and Central Coast areas. Jacob has a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management from the University of Newcastle, and is passionate about the construction industry and his role in providing clients with an exceptional construction experience.

    Ethan graduated with a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management with Honours at the University of Newcastle, and has been with the team for the past 6 months. Ethan has 4 years’ experience working in the residential and commercial construction sectors. He enjoys building relationships with colleagues and clients, and is passionate about delivering projects with a gentle, persistent and approachable nature.

    Darrell Smith Site Supervisor

    Darrell has gained over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry since he completed his apprenticeship as a carpenter, and has operated his own building company for many years prior to joining our team. He is focused on quality, ensuring clients will be satisfied with their finished product, and is constantly onsite with our employees and subcontractors, making sure everything meets the high standards of our directors and clients.

    Peta Convery Approvals Coordinator

    Peta has 15 years’ experience in administration and holds a Certificate IV in Business Administration. Peta is part of the design and approvals team and works closely with all our clients to guide them through our approvals process. Peta is a customer service and people-focused person, who is dedicated to making sure her clients are happy.

    Steve has worked in the construction industry for over 15 years. He holds a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) from the University of Newcastle, and is completing his Masters of Digital Media. Steve works closely with the design and approvals team to ensure all our granny flat designs are designed to our clients’ requirements. He is very detailed and meticulous in his work and enjoys creating custom design solutions for every site.

    Kris has worked in the administration field for over 20 years in both the transport and construction industries. Kris’ role as the Office Manager incorporates accounts payable and accounts receivable. She is a very detail orientated person who loves to get things right and ensures all the correct processes are followed for a smooth-running office.

    Naomi has 30 years’ experience in administration and accounts in various industries, including insurance, IT and telecommunications. She’s spent the last 15 years in the construction industry, and has worked with Backyard Grannys and sister company Nulex Construction since they began more than 6 years ago.

    Erin Murray Procurement Officer

    Erin holds a Bachelor of Information Technology and has also studied business and accounts administration. She brings 6 years of experience in these fields and a diverse skill set to the team. Erin works closely with the project team and our suppliers to ensure that the projects can be delivered on time and in line with the client’s expectations, ensuring every material and item that is ordered matches each client’s specific collections.

    Jasmin Carman Receptionist & Marketing Coordinator

    Jasmin has 6 years’ experience in the administration field working in various industries including engineering, rail and event planning. She has extensive knowledge of administration management, creating procedures & processes, and managing day to day tasks. Jasmin supports all the teams in the office, and works closely with the Directors assisting them with additional tasks. Jasmin is currently completing her marketing qualifications and manages the marketing and social media scheduling alongside the Directors.
