OUR DIRECTOR

Alex is passionate about the construction industry, business and his team.

With over 15 years experience in the Construction Industry, Alex is the Managing Director of Backyard Grannys.

Since completing a Bachelor of Construction Management at the University of Newcastle, Alex has worked in wide range of Project Management roles in both Sydney and Newcastle. During this time, Alex developed a strong background in the commercial construction sector – working a diverse scope of projects including fit outs, major club refurbishment and construction projects, retirement villages and nursing homes.

Alex started Backyard Grannys in 2011, after identifying a growing market demand for secondary residential dwellings, . Having built in excess of 900 granny flats in just under a decade, Backyard Grannys is now the leading granny flat builder in Newcastle and the Central Coast..

In 2014 Alex won the Young Entrepreneur Award with Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards and in 2015 received the Hunter Business Chamber Young Business Person of the Year Merit Award.

Alex is passionate about the building industry, the local Newcastle community and business in general. He enjoys developing his team and creating an enjoyable work culture, always with the goal to create quality projects and outcomes for the Nulex and Backyard Grannys clients.

    Annette Senior Sales Consultant

    Annette has been involved in all areas of Backyard Grannys for over 6 years, now specialising in Sales to utilise the experience she gained in design and approvals. She has a brilliant track record of happy clients thanks to her ability to give expert advice on the best way to build on any property she visits. Annette holds a Bachelor of Teaching which has contributed to her attention to detail and organisation. Annette combines what each client hopes to achieve with what is possible on each site to come up with the ultimate granny flat solution.

      Grant’s clients will get the granny flat they want and love because he enjoys taking time to listen and will always ask the right questions, which results in a creative solution tailored to meet each customer’s needs. Grant has degrees in Chemical Engineering and Process Control, and his engineering background helps him to pay attention to the details, while also looking at the big picture. One of Grant’s favourite things about working as a sales consultant, is getting the chance to have his clients heard, and helping take the time needed to create beautiful and modern granny flats.

        Garry is an experienced Mentor, Business and Operations Manager. He has a demonstrated history of success working in both the Non-profit/NDIS and Corporate industries. Garry has completed studies in Business, Coaching, and Lean Manufacturing. Over the last 30 years, Garry has built, extended, and renovated a number of houses as an owner builder and made capital gains through investment housing. As part of the team here, Garry works tirelessly to achieve outcomes that match his client’s needs and results in wins for everyone.

                Aemelia is the Architectural Designer here at Backyard Grannys and has been a part of the team for over 3 years. Aemelia has completed her Bachelor of Design in Architecture and is currently completing her Masters of Architecture at the Curtin University of Perth. In her role, Aemelia works closely with the approvals and sales team to ensure our client’s vision of their dream granny flat or small home comes to life. Aemelia has an artistic flair and really enjoys interior design and creating spaces for people to feel comfortable and at home.

                  Thomas Architectural Designer

                  Since completing a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) at Newcastle University, Tom has commenced a Masters of Architecture and works closely with our design and planning team to ensure clients needs are met. Tom has keen interest in residential design with a specific focus on sustainable design. A keen soccer player, when he’s not in the office, you’ll most likely find Tom on the soccer field with his team mates.

                    With over 10 years experience coordinating building approvals in relation to residential construction projects, in both the Public and Private sectors, Rochelle believes that exemplary customer service and overall client satisfaction is the most important factor for any project, and prides herself on making sure that every client’s expectations are exceeded during the Design and Approvals phase.

                      Caroline is currently completing a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management (Honours) at the University of Newcastle. Caroline came to us with an extensive knowledge in Customer Service and uses this daily in her role as an Approvals Coordinator to help her clients achieve their ideas and visions. One of Caroline’s favourite parts of her role is working with her clients creatively and bringing their concepts to life.

Michelle has an open and honest communication style which makes her a wonderful team member and approachable point of contact for our clients.

                                        Daniel Operations Manager

                                        Daniel completed a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management (Honours) as well as a Master of Business Administration and has worked for the company for 7 years. In those years, Dan has worked in every team in the business from onsite with the carpenters, project managing, to sales and approvals. He now works closely with all the teams to ensure that processes are efficient, and that client’s expectations are met at each stage of the project. Dan develops new processes and systems to continue to improve the way we build granny flats. One of Dan’s favourite parts of his role is working with the team on problem solving to make sure we can achieve a client’s ideas or figure out how to physically build on some of the tricky sites.                                           Josh Estimator

                                          Josh has come to the Backyard Grannys team with a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Design, Development & Regional Planning (Town Planning) from the Queensland University of Technology, a Certificate IV in Building and Construction specialising in Estimating, and has 8 years of full-time experience in project management. With Josh’s wide range of qualifications and experience, he is a great asset to the team by always putting his customers first and working efficiently and skillfully to assist all teams here at Backyard Grannys.

                                            Justin Project Supervisor

                                            Justin began his experience in the building industry as an Apprentice Carpenter over 17 years ago. He has worked in many roles throughout the years from a Carpenter, Leading Hand, Site Supervisor, now specialising as a Project Manager. Justin has worked on both commercial and residential sites, including multi-unit residential, 70 room resorts, ambulance stations, custom designer homes and granny flats. Justin strongly believes that if it is not good enough for his own home then it is not acceptable for yours. Backyard Grannys have loved having Justin on board for the last 7 years.

                                              Jack Project Supervisor

                                              Jack has completed his Bachelor of Construction Management with the University of Newcastle and has been with Backyard Grannys for just over 6 years, working on a large number of granny flat and small home projects in that time. Working closely with clients, certifiers, engineers, suppliers, and tradesmen, Jack always enjoys a challenge and works tirelessly to ensure that his projects progress quickly and smoothly.

                                                Tom Project Supervisor

                                                Tom has been with the Backyard Grannys team for a total of 5 years, his first 4 years as a carpenter/site supervisor. In the last year, Tom has transitioned into the Project Management role, where he enjoys working closely with clients and suppliers to ensure his projects are completed to the highest possible standards. Tom has completed his Certificate III in Carpentry and Construction, and his Certificate III in Building and Construction.

                                                  Darrell Site Supervisor

                                                  Darrell has gained over 35 year’s experience in the construction industry since he completed his apprenticeship as a carpenter, and has operated his own building company for many years prior to joining the Backyard Grannys team. He is focused on quality, ensuring clients will be satisfied with their finished product, and is constantly onsite with our employees and subcontractors, making sure everything meets the high standards of our director and clients.

Kris works very closely with Director Alex Mitchell, where she assists in all other areas such as Management and Human Resources. She is a very detail orientated person who loves to get things right and ensures all the correct processes are followed for a smooth-running office.

Erin works closely with the project team and all of our suppliers to ensure that projects are delivered on time and in line with our client’s expectations.
