Only the best for mum: creating a modern Newcastle granny flat for a mother-son duo
An up-and-coming village on the edge of a seaside city, Newcastle is in hot demand. This northwestern suburb is brimming with quirky cafes, peaceful parkland and assorted boutiques. Not to mention it’s just a 15-minute drive from the Pacific Ocean!
And now, it’s home to yet another one of our gorgeous granny flats!
This client had long been on the hunt for a property with a backyard big enough for his mum, Lyndall, to live on the same site in a spacious granny flat. Having searched far and wide for the perfect set up, he found exactly what he was looking for.
From there, all the Bridges needed was a professional team to make their dream design a reality. After getting in touch with Backyard Grannys, their Newcastle granny flat was built and ready for residence in just 15 weeks!
With Kalen occupying the front house and Lyndall in her very own backyard abode, this mother-son duo have aced multi-generational living (and we all know that’s quite the feat!). Balancing the best of both worlds, they can now enjoy their own separate space and privacy while settling down only a stone’s throw from each other.
A cost-effective home with all the comforts
Kalen and Lyndall chose the Bardo design as the basis for their one-bedroom Newcastle granny flat. With a dual skillion roof, axon cladding and a timber side patio, the front façade sets the tone for this fresh, modern home.
Inside, the clever floor plan maximises space and sunlight to create a sense of pure serenity. Firstly, you’ll be welcomed by an open-plan lounge and kitchen area draped in lush greenery and sunshine. Designed for bright, airy living, the flat is complete with highlight windows, lustrous splashback tiles and glossy Formica Flint Crystal benchtops!
Next is a large bathroom adorned with full ceiling tiles, as well as a stylish bedroom with a fully-mirrored built-in wardrobe, berber grid carpet and fan lighting. Lyndall needn’t worry about mozzies or flies either, thanks to fiberglass fly screens with Tsol glazing.
With upgraded power points, appliances and decorative finishes throughout, the Bridges prove that compact spaces can provide the ultimate comfort (when done right!).
Prepping for a plunge pool
Lucky for Lyndall, these extra touches don’t stop at her front door. Rather, our team put in slab piers at the beginning of the project to make sure the granny flat was built to accommodate a future pool. Having helped Kalen to work out all the details in advance, he can now get their swimming hole completed before those summer heatwaves roll around!
With it’s very own oasis on the way, this Newcastle granny flat is set to become even more of a showstopper!
