Meet the Backyard Grannys Architectural Design Team – Steve Fokes

 In Meet The Team

Around a year ago Backyard Grannys welcomed an exciting addition to the team – our first Architectural Designer – Steve Folkes.

The construction industry has been a career-calling for Steve. Aside from early bartending gigs, Steve has always worked in the construction industry, initially as a labourer and trades assistant on domestic, commercial and civil construction projects.

Steve’s early years in the construction industry gave him the opportunity to gain valuable practical skills, stay fit through the manual labour involved and enjoy the results of the finished product at the end of a job.

Unfortunately, Steve’s body began to disagree with his career choice and he made the choice to down the manual tools and head to university.

Steve completed a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and a Masters of Digital Media at the University of Newcastle. He is currently completing a Certificate IV in NaTHERS Assessment, the qualification designed to meet the needs of assessors operating under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme.

Self-described as tenacious, Steve enjoys design in all its forms, 3D modelling, animation and playing the guitar. He is creative and enjoys a challenge and while he likes to think he’s fairly open-minded and easy-going, Steve admits he can show a stubborn streak at times!

Family-orientated, the times he enjoys the most outside of his career are those spent with his family when they come together from across many different parts of Australia for a holiday or celebration.

On the job, Steve works closely with the design an approvals team to ensure all granny flats are designed exactly to clients’ requirement, and he enjoys creating custom design solutions for every site.

Steve says time at Backyard Grannys has provided him the opportunity for personal growth in a pleasant working environment alongside great colleagues.
