A customised granny flat for Shirley, who wanted to be closer to the grandkids
About half an hour north of Newcastle is the suburb of Medowie. A family friendly area that offers a bit of respite from the bigger city buzz of Newcastle, and better sense of community than the seaside hub of nearby Port Stephens. Families can enjoy homes set on sizable plots of land, which is where we find grandmother and now local resident, Shirley.
Shirley is a family-orientated grandmother who loves nothing more than being close to her family and grandchildren. With her son moving into the main house on a large block, Shirley decided she wanted to make the most of the surrounding space by building a granny flat where she could also enjoy her independence.
Not ones for compromise either, we at Backyard Grannys believe she should have her cake and eat it too! Here’s how we helped her out…
A spacious layout for an independent soul with a heart of gold
Opting for one of our Smart Footprint Home builds, Shirely ensured that there would be no compromise on space for her. The custom build is 103 square metres in area, compared to our standard 60 square metre build. And why not?! If you have space, use it!
As a result, outside, Shirley is able to enjoy a bigger patio area where she can sip her morning coffee surrounded by greenery. The extra space also allowed us to construct a footpath to skirt the outside of the granny flat, so she never has to worry about tripping on uneven ground.
Inside, the larger build means Shirley has a separate laundry area boasting plenty of linen space and a standard Roma LT-35C laundry tub, so getting stains out of the grandkid’s clothing won’t be an issue.
With Valencia White tile flooring paving the way through the open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas, you immediately get a warm sense from the interior. But you’re never too warm, with Shirley opting for a ducted air conditioning system to make sure she’s always comfortable, no matter the season.
The Seal Grey kitchen cabinetry and Essastone benchtop finish in the kitchen gives Shirley plenty of room to whip up some sweet treats for the grandkids. And with the range of Artusi kitchen appliances including LED display electric oven, gas cooktop and ducted rangehood, cooking for her loved ones will be a treat for herself too.
The two-bedroom build features identical bedrooms with Berber grid carpet in Sandalwood, spacious fully framed mirrored sliding door wardrobes and windows with Hunter Valley Roller Blinds so Shirley can control the level of morning light she wakes up to.
Despite the size of the customised project, we were able to complete the work in only 20 weeks! Knowing that Shirley can now relax and enjoy her family and independence, we at Backyard Grannys are always happy to help.
